Below please find basic information provided by Mississauga Animal Services as well as links to more detailed handout we have received from the city.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Keep your family and pets safe by taking these simple steps.<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">See or Encounter a Coyote<\/h4>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><p><\/p>\n<li>If a coyote is displaying unusual behaviour such as approaching people, stay calm, make yourself as large as possible, clap and shout loudly, or make startling movements to encourage a coyote to leave an area<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Never turn your back or run from a coyote, their natural instinct is to chase<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Carry a walking stick or startle the animal by opening an umbrella, using a flashlight or activating an audible alarm.<\/li>\n<p><\/p><\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Keep Your Family Safe<\/h4>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><p><\/p>\n<li>Never leave young children unattended outside<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Teach children to never approach wildlife<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>When walking in areas where coyotes are active, bring protection such as a cell phone, personal alarm, umbrella, walking stick or flashlight<\/li>\n<p><\/p><\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Keep Your Pets Safe<\/h4>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><p><\/p>\n<li>Keep cats indoors<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Supervise your pet outdoors at all times<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Keep dogs on a short six foot (1.8 m) leash and don\u2019t use an extendable leash<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Maintain control of your dog and don\u2019t allow them to chase coyotes<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Check your yard for wildlife before letting your pet outside<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Vaccinate your pet regularly against rabies and distemper<\/li>\n<p><\/p><\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Animal Proof Your Property<\/h4>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><p><\/p>\n<li>Keep garbage\/compost in a garage or shed and ensure lids are secure<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Remove food sources such as bird feeders, seed spillage and fallen tree fruit<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Feed pets indoors<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Do not feed coyotes or other wildlife<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Enclose spaces under decks and sheds to discourage wildlife from nesting<\/li>\n<p><\/p><\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>It is not unusual to see coyotes and other wildlife in Mississauga. Contact Mississauga Animal Services if a coyote is displaying bold behaviour or if it appears sick or injured.
